CNN: “How Roblox became the ‘it’ game for tweens — and a massive business” (Katie Salen Tekinbaş quoted)

Katie Salen Tekinbaş, a game design professor at the University of California, Irvine, estimates that the virtual camp nonprofit Connected Camps she co-founded, which teaches kids how to build Roblox games, saw attendance jump to 10,000 over the summer, while previous years typically saw 2,000 attendees.close dialog

“I think it does begin to open up pathways for young people, particularly into the tech sector, which is hard to get into,” said Tekinbaş.

Exploring Design + Ethics: Gillian Hayes Discusses Inclusive Design with Industry Leaders

On Nov. 5, 2020 at 3 p.m., UCI and the creative agency a small studio will host a free virtual panel discussion on Exploring Design + Ethics. While an earlier installment of this series focused on innovation and social progress, this event will examine inclusivity.

“Ethical design is necessarily inclusive design,” says Gillian Hayes, vice provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate Division at UCI. “We simply cannot design ethical systems without being more inclusive of a variety of voices.”

Professor Crooks to Discuss Education Technology in Working Class Communities of Color

On Monday, Oct. 19, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., UCI Humanities Center is hosting an event, The Black Liberation Movement and Radical Community Education. The panel discussion, which will take place on Zoom, will feature the following speakers:

  • Ericka Huggins, an educator, Black Panther Party member, former political prisoner, human rights advocate, and poet;
  • Angela LeBlanc-Ernest, an independent scholar and filmmaker, director of the Oakland Community School Documentary Project, and cofounder of the Intersectional Black Panther Party History Project; 
  • Damien Sojoyner, an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at UCI; and
  • Roderic Crooks, an assistant professor in the Department of Informatics at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS).
